LYNN CASTLE

One of the more recent pleasures on the turntable has been the excellent Lee Hazlewood Industries singles box set that Light In The Attic recently put out. It has some truly fantastic stuff, showcasing just how original and sensitive a producer Lee truly was.

The crown jewel of the set in my estimation is this Lynn Castle single - 'The Lady Barber'. There's not much info to be found on these sides, but I did discover that Ms. Castle was indeed a lady barber and happening chick on the strip. She apparently cut hair for the Byrds among others, which might make her responsible for Chris Hillman's early-years perm.

In any case, among her other accomplishments she placed a song with Monkees - not as good as her own only 45 - and an appearance on What's My Line, a corny gameshow with Frank Sinatra (see above).

The LHI single is something else though... Lovely psyched-out garage folk, not too dissimilar to her Byrds circa Younger Than Yesterday. Check out the A, and check out the B.

lynn castle also dated phil spector around 1959,whom she left due to his jealousy & possessiveness, before he fled to nyc. around the same time, spector entered a studio with lee hazlewood to learn a few things, taking castle with him,and (apparently) was non too pleased with their blossoming friendship. it's highly likely sinatra and castle were already acquainted by this point.
